The Frank Nora Show has a new website – show.franknora.com. (It can also be reached via franknorashow.com). And it’s easy to find on the iTunes Store.

Additionally, you can hear it (along with many other great shows) on The Overnightscape Underground – a wild frontier of Internet radio experimentation – enter if you dare!

The Frank Nora Show is a direct continuation of Frank’s previous shows - The Overnightscape (2003-2009) and The Rampler (2008-2009).

With a brand new episode released most weekdays, the show is still going strong and is better than ever – tune in and check it out!

For all my new shows, go to ONSUG.COM

See you there!!

—————————————————————————

To celebrate the 7th Anniversary of The Overnightscape, I have launched a new website: FrankNora.com

On this site, you can listen to my entire radio archive in a convenient, web-based player – all of The Overnightscape, The Rampler, The Overnightscape Underground, and a whole lot more! There’s never been an easier way to listen to the archive – which currently stands at 1,865 tracks with 1,618 hours of audio (67.4 days).

—————————————————————————

I came up with the idea for The Overnightscape on Thursday, March 13, 2003. I was on my way home from work in NYC, riding the PATH train back to NJ. Here’s exactly what I wrote on my Palm Pilot:

3/13/03 6:54 pm

non-meta half-hour talk show, just me

3/13/03 7:03 pm

the overnightscape
nightscans

I went home, set up my recording system, and started recording the show at around 9:55 PM – less than 3 hours after I wrote down my idea for the show and its name (wow, just think, it could have been called Nightscans…) What I recorded was The Overnightscape Beta #1 – the first of two test shows I did before releasing the first official episode two weeks later.

Hear these and all the rest on FrankNora.com!

—————————————————————————

After a bit of chaos in the past few years, The Overnightscape has evolved into The Overnightscape Underground – still essentially the same, but with a slightly different configuration.

It’s been 7 years, and the pleasantly insane rambling is still going strong – and getting more insane all the time!!!

Enjoy the archive!

Originally released on Bluffcosm.com in November 2001. Edited from “Classictronica #2″, recorded at a NAVA video game collector’s meeting at Video Game Connections in Howell, NJ.

Some potentially “offensive” content.

This is one of my favorite “Blufftoons”. Blufftoons were the audio pieces on my Internet radio station, Bluffcosm.com. The idea was that a piece of non-music audio could be listened to over and over just like a song. To me, this Blufftoon is a real nihilistic treat.

This one is not my best work… but there’s still a lot of interesting stuff to check out.

7/4/07 – I re-listened to this, and I have to say it’s an awesome recording. During the show I mention how I intended to do more episodes on a regular basis – but that never happened, unfortunately. There is #2, from 2003, which I will release at some point…  Also, I realized that the end of this episode is a lot like the ending of the final episode of The Sopranos! We are in a restaurant and the tape ends abruptly with no warning!

My old Internet radio station, Bluffcosm.com, was established on November 19, 1999, and lasted until May 20, 2004. Here is a copy of the very last version of the Bluffcosm website, before it switched over to being TheOvernightscape.com.

This copy of the old site has a LOT of dead links and outdated information. But it does contain a lot of very interesting stuff!

“The Motor Excursion Ruffians #3 (6/16/07)” – recorded June 16, 20071:51:21 – 101 MB - StationUnlimited.com release #75 (June 22, 2007) – su-MER-01-MotorExcRuf_3-075

“The Motor Excursion Ruffians”, starring me (Frank Edward Nora) and Peter Litkey, began as a successor to our previous show, “Train Crap & Blood”. The idea is that we have so much freedom that we never use… you can just get in a car and drive and who knows where you’ll wind up!

Episode 1 of “The Motor Excursion Ruffians” was recorded on February 11, 2001, in western New Jersey and released on my old Internet radio station, Bluffcosm.com. Episode 2 was recorded on April 4-5, 2003 (between The Overnightscape #4 and #5), on a visit down to see our friend Bryan in Virginia. Over 8 hours of material was recorded – but it was never released. I plan on releasing both of these here on Station Unlimited in the near future.

This past Saturday, June 16, 2007, I got together with Pete and we went on a “motor excursion” without thinking of “The Motor Excursion Ruffians” – in fact, I didn’t even know if I was going to record at all. But I started recording some stuff, and later in the day we both realized we were doing a new episode of “The Motor Excursion Ruffians”!

Here is a description of the recording…

After waking up at 4:30 AM and waiting 5.5 hours for White Stripes tickets, I was about to go to sleep when Peter called me… we decided to get together and go on a trip, featuring a torrential Thunderstorm and hail, roof parking of The Fashion Center mall in Paramus, NJ, coffee from Blimpie, weird spiral staircase, old school architecture, heading north on Route 17, Woodbury Common Premium Outlets in Central Valley, NY, super heavy pottery, free drinks and CDs, finding the food court, Le Gourmet Chef, Pretzel Time, the cosmic lemonade balance, Pete chooses an item from the Protocol Personal Products Convenience Center in the men’s room, candy review (“Ora Labs XStreme Sour Drops – Strawberry”), Folz, Pringles vending machines, finding the exit, Le Creuset, Lladro, dust collectors, Route 6 – cool road, Bear Mountain State Park, free parking, merry go round closed, tranquil feeling, ice cream vending machine, a walk around Hessian Lake, forbidden rock climbing, vending machine deaths, vehicle, out of breath, living a screensaver, exercise, a methaphor for life, cigar, chipmunk, Canadian geese hissing, the goose fight question, the judgement of the ice cream deception, flags, “It’s a Mistake” by Men At Work, Pallisades Parkway, Fort Lee, Mitsuwa Marketplace (“The Japanese Mall”), Hungary and Hungarian stuff, food court, food samples, Auto Freak, hoji tea coming out of the wall, packets of unknown material, Pete tries some natto, A Bathing Ape, Pocari Sweat, exploring the supermarket, Creap, Re-Ment, miniature cleaning supplies, Frank spends all his money, miso choice, deer joke, soothing music
The United States of Whatever, Liam Lynch, Sifl & Olly, The Sharper Image, and finding the way out of Edgewater.

“Audio Street Fair Blues (6/11/07)” – recorded June 11, 200720:04 – 18.3 MB - StationUnlimited.com release #74 (June 19, 2007) – su-PLS-01-AudioStreetFB-074

On Monday, June 11, 2007 I was walking through Times Square in NYC and I saw a street fair called “Taste of Times Square”. Iwent went for 2 blocks on 46th St. from Times Square to 9th Ave. I walked the full length of it and realized it would make a great “Place Sounds” piece (a recording of an audio environment). So I started recording and heading back through the fair.

Unfortunately, things didn’t work out like I planned. First of all a lot of the musicians I had seen on the first walk thru were taking their breaks. Then it started to rain… lightly at first and then it turned into a real downpour. And then I realized I had pressed pause by accident and lost a lot of the stuff I was recording.

This piece is the final result – the first in the “Place Sounds” series on Station Unlimited (and the first release in over 6 months!). I look forward to recording more “Place Sounds” in the future – it is certainly a different kind of audio content than what people are used to, but in the right frame of mind such stuff can be very enjoyable and intriguing to listen to.

Welcome to the new version of the Station Unlimited website! Over the past week or so I have converted all the existing content of Station Unlimited into WordPress format. I have “backdated” all entries to reflect the original date of release.

Here’s the story – Greg created the website “Beercasting.com”, with the general idea of getting a bunch of people together at a bar, and then recording and podcasting their conversation on several different topics. At some point, Greg changed the name of the website to “Sparkcasting.com” and added a potential market research aspect to the project. This caused some controversy, as seen on this blog post. Then Greg posted on the NYC Podcasting Meetup forum, also causing a bit of controversy.

In any case, I went to the Beercasting that night, and we didn’t start recording till real late. Only Greg, Steve, and myself were left. Greg wanted me to use my recorder, so I recorded the Beercast. We talked on a number of different topics, including the Sparkcasting marketing idea, podcasting, Adam Curry, stats, and male aggression. Toward the end, waitress “Myar” joined the recording. I eventually went to the bathroom and the Beercast ended.

The next day I sent the audio file to Greg, who said he would post it on Sparkcasting.com. But, as it happened, Sparkcasting was never updated. If fact, to this day, the site does not appear to have been updated at all since May of 2005. I think I emailed Greg a few times, but eventually I forgot about the whole thing.

Then, at the Podcasting Expo in Ontario, California, in September 2006, who should I meet at the bar at the Marriott but Greg! It was good to see him again, and he said he was working on some new stuff. I mentioned the recording to him and he said I could go ahead and post it.

I’m still not sure what happened with the whole Sparkcasting thing, but in any case, here is the complete, unedited “Forgotten Beercast” from that long ago day…

“Wedding at Woolman Hill (7/29/06)” – recorded July 29, 20061:52:36 – 103.1 MB - StationUnlimited.com release #58 (August 14, 2006) – su-AFT-05_Wedding_at_WH-058

Recorded on Saturday, July 29, and Sunday, July 30, 2006. On this Audio Field Trip, my wife Denice and I travel from northern New Jersey to a wedding in western Massachusetts. Phil and Sarah, listeners to The Overnightscape, are getting married at a Quaker retreat called “Woolman Hill”. On this recording, you’ll hear about the long drive up, the creepy motel, arrival at the wedding, the wedding ceremony, walking through a cornfield the next day, visits to the Yankee Candle Flagship Store and the Hampshire Mall, and much more.

I recorded this Audio Field Trip on my Edirol R-1 digital recorder. Unfortunately, the Compact Flash card had gone faulty but I didn’t know about it. The total recording consists of 75 segments, totalling almost 2.5 hours. Unfortunately, 11 of the files were corrupt – so about 36 minutes of recordings were lost, all interspersed throughout. The lost segments include some commentary about the wedding, the night drive back to the motel, and an interview with Phil and Sarah.

This release consists of the raw unedited audio (minus the corrupt segments). It is a long, rambling piece of audio, and the “narrative” suffers a bit from the loss of some of the segments. But there is a lot of interesting and very varied stuff in this audio. Hopefully I’ll do an edited version at some point that will be an easier listen.

I went to check out the opening of the new Apple Store Fifth Avenue and I wound up recording over 2-and-a-half hours of audio! Instead of waiting weeks or months to edit it and play it on the show, I figured I’d release the raw audio right away for your listening pleasure… nothing edited (except a few phone numbers I had to bleep). Ben from CodedSignal.com pretty much became my co-host at one point. I met a bunch of other podcasters there – it was a lot of fun! (P.S. Gaurav got in at 9:50 PM.)

This journey starts off with me and Peter Litkey driving to pick up his friend Brian. We then go to see Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Afterwards, we drive around very wealthy areas of New Jersey, visit Pete’s old school, and Pete’s car reaches 200,000 miles. Along the way we talk about many interesting things!

Recorded on May 28, 2005, I kept meaning to edit it and play it on the show, but I never got to it. So as time went on, it became known as “The Lost Audio Field Trip”. Now, it is released in all of its 2+ hour glory!

“The Audio Field Trip” is a feature on The Overnightscape where I go out into the world and record various adventures and activities. Most of these are edited and played in their entirety on the show – but two of them are special cases. The first one is “The Audio Field Trip #1″, which I was only able to play a very little bit of on The Overnightscape #20 (7/24/03). This is the complete recording.

On this trip, I go on “The Iselin Run”, driving down to my storage unit in Iselin, NJ. This full audio was played for a while in 2003 on the Bluffcosm “live stream”, and was then released as one of the “Second Anniversary Bonus Releases” back on March 27, 2005. This release has much better audio quality.

A week after the first Beta Episode, I recorded another show (Beta #2), with the idea that it could potentially become the first real show – but this one as well fell short in several ways. It was not till the following week, on March 27, 2003, that the first official episode was recorded and released! (Available in the “Episode Archive 1-100″)

3/13/03 7:03 pm

the overnightscape
nightscans

I went home, set up my recording system, and started recording the show at around 9:55 PM – less than 3 hours after I wrote down my idea for the show and its name (wow, just think, it could have been called Nightscans…) What I recorded was The Overnightscape Beta #1 – a test show that definitely was not fit for release!

This is the recording, which I originally released back on March 27, 2005 in celebration of the Second Anniversary of The Overnightscape. This release has much better audio quality than the previous release. But remember… it’s really rough and weird and not very good. If you’re a fan of The Overnightscape, though, you might find it interesting to listen to…

I started a magazine in college with my friend Mike. It was called Anything But Monday, and by 1988 we were distributing it to comic books shops nationwide. Unfortunately, we didn’t sell enough copies to keep it going, and by the summer of 1989 the business was falling apart.

On August 16, 1989, just 3 months before the final collapse of the magazine in November, Mike and I took a trip up to Bethel, NY, where people had gathered in an impromptu celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Woodstock, often referred to as Woodstock ‘89 (here is the Wikipedia article on it.) The idea was that we would take pictures and interview people for a feature in the magazine. We recorded a 90-minute tape of the event, primarily so we could transcribe the interviews for the magazine.

After we left Bethel, our car broke down and we watched the lunar eclipse in the parking lot of some municipal building in the middle of nowhere. Eventually, our business partner Jim Lord came and rescued us. We put together the feature for our last issue, as seen below (click for larger pictures):

And here are some hi-res scans of the photos we took (in chronological order):01-Dennis 02-Daniel 03-Steven 04-Ziggy_and_Bosco 05-Karen 06-Max 07-Gary 08-Robert 09-Maureen 10-Debbie 11-Murph 12-George 13-UnknownThe set on Flickr is here.

The interview tape sat in a box for over 11 years. In January 2001, I finally listened to it and put in on computer, editing some segments for my Internet radio station, Bluffcosm.com. I was amazed at how vastly superior the audio itself was to the print piece we had derived from it. At that time, I put together 5 audio pieces (“Blufftoons”), totalling about 20 minutes. Plus, I exctracted a segment called “Mountain Madness” which I used in several other Blufftoons.

Now, on December 17, 2005, I am finally releasing the audio of the complete tape. Absolutely nothing is edited out – this is the full, raw audio. Besides being quite entertaining, I think this recording also has some historical significance. I hope you enjoy it!!!
